Our Approach

At OKD, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, seen and supported, and when teaching is clear, consistent and well-planned.

We care deeply about:

  • good technique taught in age-appropriate ways

  • steady progression and challenges

  • children genuinely enjoying learning

  • creating calm, welcoming spaces where everyone belongs

Children are encouraged to try, practise, make mistakes and keep going. Our teachers know when to push gently and when to step back.

Olive’s Story

OKD was founded in 2023 by Olive Kane during maternity leave, following more than 15 years working across the professional dance and arts sector.

Alongside teaching, Olive has worked in producing and arts management roles with organisations including Greenwich Dance, DanceEast, Royal Academy of Dance, Royal Opera House, Russell Maliphant Dance Company, Rhiannon Faith Company, and Second Hand Dance.

This background informs OKD’s ethos: combining artistic rigour with care, reflection, and ethical practice. OKD is rooted in Waltham Forest, the borough where Olive grew up, and continues to work closely with local families, schools, and community partners.

As OKD grows, Olive remains committed to integrity, quality of teaching, and the wellbeing of children, families, and the teaching team. Olive is closely involved in shaping the programmes, supporting the team and maintaining the culture of the organisation.
